Abstract |
Six samples from the Namiba Terra Replux range of spot mercury vapour lamps were tested; three 160watt lamps (ref. nos. BR5, BR6, BR16) and three bulbs described as 100watt lamps (ref. nos. BR3, BR4, BR15), although two of these (BR3, BR4) were in fact operating at 160 watt. When assessing the potential of UVBproducing lamps in the vivarium, it is necessary to examine the overall output of the lamp, the shape of the beam and the range of wavelengths which are being emitted. Recordings are made using a range of meters and a UVVIS spectrometer. Measurements are taken of power consumption, total UVB output, the output in the range of wavelengths responsible for vitamin D3 synthesis, UVC and lux. The initial decay ("burningin") of each lamp is recorded and the beam characteristics plotted on spread charts. Direct readings taken with the broadband UVB meter, UV Index meter, UVC meter and lux meter from all the lamps on test, after 105 hours burn, are summarised in the following chart: (full details are in the main report) Added by: Sarina |
