Abstract |
Radio transmitters were force fed to western diamondback rattlesnakes, Crotalus atrox, that were released and followed in their natural habitat in Southwestern Oklahoma. Movements, behavior, and ecology of these snakes were studied for a two year period. The activity periods of C. atrox fluctuated seasonally as animals moved during mid-day (winter), early morning and late evening (spring and fall), and mid-night (summer). Migrations to and from the dens occurred in spring and fall. Summer ranges were basically the same each year and were located 1-2 km from the den. Rattlesnakes did not wander randomly but moved on directed courses. Results from orientation tests lead us to conclude that C. atrox can use solar cues and that they can use these to learn directional goals.
